The Skarloey Railway needed some help since there was a lot of work to do. Even Luke had to come down from the Blue Mountain Quarry to help out in the Yards. This made him feel a little homesick. He explained this to the other engines. Skarloey suggested that Luke will return to the Blue Mountain Quarry once Mr. Percival finds an engine. Luke felt a bit better, but still wasn't sure.
Mr. Percvial and some men looked around for an engine that got left behind after the Mid Sodor Railway closed. At last, a man shouted to Mr. Percival that he found what looked to be an engine. The men met Smudger, a troublesome engine that got turned into a generator. Mr. Percival didn't know about Smudger's past, so he brought a lorry who took him to the Sodor Steamworks to be repaired.
Victor and Kevin didn't know about Smudger either, so he was repaired in no time at all. Duke, Sir Handel, and, Peter Sam were furious when they found out. Rheneas questioned who the engine was, so Duke told him. Rusty suggested that Smudger had learned his lesson, and that he could be Really Useful. Duke didn't think so.
Smudger was shunting some coaches for Mighty Mac's next train. He was feeling pleased with himself. He became to rock 'n' roll similar to Duncan. Duncan puffed into the yard. He was pleased to see Smudger. Duncan and Smudger were soon good friends. Mighty Mac arrived to see that their coaches still haven't been shunted. They were cross and told Mr. Percival.
Mr. Percival spoke severely to Smudger. He felt bad, and wanted to be useful now. Mr. Percival accepted Smudger into his fleet of engines. Duncan and Smudger were still friends, but Smudger was different all the same. Everyone apologized for not trusting him. Smudger was pleased to be part of the Skarloey Railway and promised to work his hardest.
